About THE FIRE

The Fire was started by owner Audra Haas in 2004 and remains a locally owned, locally minded business. Like Audra, all of The Fire’s employees are enthusiastic about Appleton’s downtown. While we all nurture our creative sides and a few of us have artistic projects outside of The Fire, you’ll never think of us as “art snobs.” In fact, we all share a belief that creativity is for everyone: Some people just haven’t discovered their inspiration yet.

While we offer some great events and classes throughout the year, we actually view every time you walk through our door as a class – if you want that experience. We’ll explain how everything works, make sure you feel comfortable, and even give you some ideas if you want. And if you arrive with a plan of your own and a desire for solitude, we promise not to hover (but we might sneak a few peeks at your project – we’re just too excited to resist).

Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we hear – and their answers. If you have any other questions about The Fire, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Do I need experience or to take a class?

Come as you are. We welcome everyone, regardless of experience, and we have projects that are suitable for anyone, from simple to extravagant.

How much does it cost?

Prices are based on the project you choose, and we’d be happy to show you options if you’re trying to stick to a particular budget. We offer everything from glass-fused pendants for as little as $5.99 to an enormous clay coffee mug (big enough to bathe a baby, we think) for $99.99. The average price of a project, though, is between $10.99 and $25.99.

Can I bring my own item to mosaic?

Sure. While we offer a wide range of items to mosaic, including clocks, candleholders, mirrors, and picture frames, we also encourage you to bring your own item, such as a decorative table. If you bring your own item, we charge 25 cents per square inch for mosaic.

Can I take my project home with me right away?

Once you’re done painting, we’ll need to fire your pottery. Similarly, after you’ve created your glasswork we’ll need time to fuse it. The usual turnaround time is seven days. For mosaic projects, you can choose to come back and grout it yourself, take a free grout kit (with instructions) and finish it at home, or have our staff grout it (for an additional 20%). If you create jewelry with our precious metal clay, we'll need a week to fire it.

Should I have a project planned before I come in?

If you have an idea in mind, feel free to bring in a picture or sketch, but it isn’t necessary. The great part about art is it embraces spontaneity – and if you already spend enough time planning in your everyday life, we think popping in and letting an idea appear might just feel good. Don’t be intimidated: You’d be surprised what first-time customers who just wander in create.

Do you offer parties?

Yes, we sure do! In fact, we love parties – and we hope you’ll consider celebrating your next special occasion with us. Check out our Groups page for more details.

What ages is The Fire good for?

We like to say there’s something for everyone from toddlers to the “young at heart” – no matter what age that might be. Because toddlers have shorter attention spans, however, we’ve created a little play nook with toys, books, and videos, so you can let your little one enjoy The Fire while you work on your own project.

Do you have gift certificates?

Yes we do. Stop by to get one in any denomination.

Is the pottery safe to eat off?
Can it go in the dishwasher or microwave?

Yes, the paints we used are absolutely safe, and what better way to enjoy mealtime than by looking at your own handiwork. We do recommend, however, that you don’t put the pottery in the microwave or dishwasher. It isn’t dangerous, but it will shorten the lifespan.

How long does a project at The Fire take?

On average, people spend 1 ½ to 2 hours creating their masterpieces, but the length will depend on what project you choose and your own personal style. If you’re here to burn through gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, you might work quickly, and if you’re here to escape the family for a little “me time” we’re sure you’ll want to make it last.

Make this!
